10 Ways to Event Design in the Green!

With the barrage of ‘Happy Earth Day’ tweets, posts and texts, it made me wonder about the purpose of all of these random messages.  The more I thought about it, I thought this is a great opportunity to give my fellow design mavens not another cliché of a reminder but instead a few tips for designing in the green.

#1 – Use invitations printed on recycled materials such as these Perfect Peonies from my own collection with Wedding Paper Divas.  They make a wonderful design statement that is feminine, stylish and environmentally friendly.

#2 – Consider a vintage gown instead of a new one fresh off the runway.  Many hands, materials and chemicals go into those new gowns but a timeless sense of elegance is often found in a vintage masterpiece.

#3 – Insist on solidifying your menu based on organic, locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats and even wines available.  In addition to going green, you will also infuse a nice jolt into your local economy.

#4 – Design with only locally grown flowers.  Many would be surprised of the orchid, rose and tulip growers that can often be found right in your own backyard.

#5 – Just one more reason to use china and not disposables.  I have never been a fan of disposable wares but if you must, such as for a pool party, select only biodegradable options.

#6 – Make arrangements with your caterer and your favorite food bank so that left over food can be donated to those in greater need.  You’ve paid for all of the food and beverages so you might as well make the most of it!

#7 – Substitute paraffin wax candles for soy based candles.  They release less carbon monoxide into our atmosphere and still add all of the same glamour.

#8 – Design with recycled fabrics such as cotton, hemp or bamboo.  These fabrics are often grown without the use of pesticides in the soil but must not have been treated for the last three years.  These fabrics must be dye-free and offer a fresh palette for an all-white ‘Diddy’ party!

#9 – Uber-private celebrity weddings summons guests to a generic parking lot so the paparazzi can be thrown off about the actual location.  Instead of luxury coaches to bring guests to the affair, consider using Smart cars.  Everyone will love your dedication for not filling our LA skyline with anymore smog!

#10 – Eliminate plastic water bottles from the bars.  They are small in stature and require so many to service an event.  Instead consider this fabulous pick from Evian and Paul Smith!
